I’m Already Sold on DC’s New Wonder Woman-Led ‘Birds of Prey’ Team (& They Haven’t Even Debuted Yet)
WARNING: Contains Potential Spoilers for JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #3!A new, all-female Birds of Prey-esque team wasn’t even on my radar, but after seeing the potential of this Wonder Woman-led group of kickass women via official art, it’s honestly all I can think about. I’m crossing my fingers (and toes) that DC follows through with what could be one of their freshest and most intriguing teams yet.
I’m particularly eager to witness core Justice League members, like Wonder Woman and Batman, interacting with some of my favorite characters, such as Starfire and other Titans…
The solicitations for DC’s January lineup are officially out, including Mark Waid and Dan Mora’s Justice League Unlimited #3—the third installment in one of my most anticipated series of the year. This narrative not only revives the previously disbanded League but also reimagines the team as bigger and better, with an open-invite system where every hero on Earth is invited to join.

The global terrorist group Inferno has taken its next step toward world dominance with an ecological disaster! Will Superman, Wonder Woman, and the others have to sacrifice the life of Swamp Thing? Plus: Plastic Man and Beast Boy work with The Atom Project to fix their scrambled superpowers! |
This fresh approach promises new character dynamics, team interactions, and likely some sub-teams. While the Titans are already confirmed as one of these splinter groups, I’m convinced DC may also be treating fans to an all-new female team featuring Wonder Woman, The Question, and Star Sapphire.
I Didn’t Know I Needed a Wonder Woman, The Question, and Star Sapphire Team-Up Until I Saw This Cover
Cover C Nathan Szerdy Card Stock Variant for Justice League Unlimited #3
At the moment, this Wonder Woman-led all-female team is purely speculative on my part, sparked by one particular variant cover for Justice League Unlimited #3, set to release on January 22, 2025. This striking cover by Nathan Szerdy showcases Diana Prince, Renee Montoya, and Carol Ferris in full superhero attire, each exuding badassery—especially Montoya, with a shotgun resting on her shoulder. While multiple variant covers were revealed in the solicitation, Szerdy’s stood out to me for this unusual character lineup, instantly grabbing my attention and fueling speculation.
What makes this potential team-up especially intriguing is that these three heroines have had minimal interaction in the past, making this lineup highly unexpected. While it could simply be a creative decision on Szerdy’s part, variant covers often serve as subtle hints toward upcoming plot developments. This leaves me hopeful that this artwork is foreshadowing an actual team-up between Wonder Woman, The Question, and Star Sapphire, potentially creating DC’s next ‘Birds of Prey’-esque team. Such a group would bring a fresh dynamic, with each character’s unique background and strengths adding complexity and intrigue.

Diana Prince, Renee Montoya, and Carol Ferris Will Likely Be the Leading Female Characters in Justice League Unlimited
Cover J 1:50 Edwin Galmon Wraparound Card Stock Variant for Justice League Unlimited #1
Even if a sub-group team-up between Diana, Renee, and Carol doesn’t happen, I believe that Szerdy’s cover is at the very least teasing that Wonder Woman, The Question, and Star Sapphire will be the leading female characters in the Justice League Unlimited narrative. While Diana is an obvious choice—being a core and founding member of the League who has already been mentioned numerous times in both the synopses and cover art—there is also a strong argument for both Renee and Carol when it comes to the likelihood that we are about to see much more of them.
In the case of Star Sapphire, she has been predominantly featured in the solicitations for all Justice League Unlimited-related material. The heroine appears on multiple main and variant covers for the series and was one of the first characters confirmed as part of the team at SDCC 2024. In fact, it was implied that she would be one of the core members of focus alongside Batman, Wonder Woman, Flash, Superman, Black Lightning, Atom, and Captain Atom. As for The Question, DC seems to be moving her to the forefront of their narrative by giving her an upcoming solo series and positioning her as the head of security for the Watchtower.
What Excites Me Most: The New Team & Character Dynamics Justice League Unlimited Will Explore
Cover H 1:50 Lucas Meyer Card Stock Variant for Justice League Unlimited #2
As previously mentioned, one of the things that excites me most about the potential team-up of Wonder Woman, The Question, and Star Sapphire is the opportunity to explore new character dynamics. This anticipation extends beyond just this trio of heroines, as Justice League Unlimited promises fans a chance to see heroes who typically don’t interact now functioning as a cohesive team. I’m particularly eager to witness core Justice League members, like Wonder Woman and Batman, interacting with some of my favorite characters, such as Starfire and other Titans, as this could lead to exciting and unexpected relationships/developments.

Wonder Woman
Wonder Woman is the superhero identity of Diana, Princess of the Amazons. Created on the island of Themyscira, Wonder Woman is a super-powered demi-goddess with extreme physical strength who utilizes magical gifts (like her famous Lasso of Truth) to defeat her foes. As mighty as her fellow heroes Superman and the Justice League, Wonder Woman is unmatched in her compassion and virtue.
